You might not know you have them until you get very sick.
The only way to know if you have syphilis and/or HIV is to get tested. The good news is that they can both be treated and managed.
Syphilis and HIV are sexually transmissible infections (STIs) that can be passed on through sex without a condom. HIV can also be passed on by sharing injecting equipment with a person who has HIV.
You can also easily pass these on to others without knowing. If you are pregnant, you can pass these STIs on to your baby which can put its life at risk.
Pregnant? Get tested to protect your baby
If you're pregnant, it's especially important to get tested (and treated if you need to) to protect your baby.
Otherwise, infections can pass on to the baby and make them very sick, and cause miscarriage or stillbirth.
